The power of self-reflection

Definition: What is self-reflection?

Self-reflection is a form of conscious self-awareness and self-observation. It is the ability to observe, understand and question one’s own thoughts, feelings and actions. Self-reflection is the mirror for our experience and our self.

  • Who am I really?
  • Why do I behave the way I do?
  • What am I really good at and what am I not?
  • What is important to me?
  • What drives me?
  • Where do I want to develop?
  • What do I want to achieve in life?
  • What goals do I still have?
  • What can I do today to achieve my goals?

The key to happiness and success

When thinking and reflecting, we examine habits or behavioral patterns, for example. The aim is to learn more about yourself, to understand yourself better and to grow personally.

Self-reflection therefore not only contributes to self-discovery. It is an essential key to happiness and success – also at work. Only by reflecting can we learn from mistakes, avoid impulsive reactions and control our emotions. In short: we live more consciously and less on “autopilot”.

Successful self-reflection only works if we deal with ourselves constructively and think positively. In other words, establishing a fundamentally positive view of our own lives. This does not mean putting on rose-tinted glasses and ignoring failures, bad luck and mishaps. But we can only continuously improve by looking at the big picture. So don’t just ask WHY, but rather with what goal in mind!

  • Promotes inner balance: Mindfulness and conscious self-observation make you feel more grounded and in control of yourself.
  • Strengthens your connection to yourself: A good relationship with yourself is fundamental to your wellbeing. Self-reflection helps you to accept yourself better and treat yourself more lovingly.
  • Increases gratitude: Reflecting on what you have and what is good for you promotes appreciation and satisfaction.
  • Enables new perspectives and empathy: By analyzing your own reactions and feelings, you can also understand others better and be more empathetic.
  • Increases happiness: Studies show that people who regularly reflect are often more satisfied and happier.

  • Increased self-awareness: Self-reflection helps you to better understand yourself – your thoughts, feelings, values and behaviors. This awareness is a key component of emotional intelligence and enables you to better recognize your emotions and their influence on your actions.
  • Promoting personal development: By reflecting on your own strengths, weaknesses and behavioral patterns, you can work on yourself in a targeted manner and develop yourself further. Without self-reflection, you would keep making the same mistakes and experiencing the same problems.
  • Better decision making: When you reflect on your experiences and their impact, you can make more informed decisions that better suit you and align with your values.
  • Strengthening self-responsibility: Self-reflection promotes the ability to take responsibility for your own actions and be accountable to yourself.
  • Greater clarity and perspective: It helps you to gain distance, organize emotions and see situations more clearly, which leads to better handling of challenges.
  • Improved communication and relationships: When you understand what you are feeling and why, you can express yourself more clearly and empathically, which strengthens your interpersonal relationships.
  • Reduction of stress and burnout: Regular self-reflection can help you to recognize and better manage stress factors, thereby reducing the risk of burnout.
